  • Irish-Canadian tenor Michael Colvin has appeared to critical acclaim on opera and concert stages throughout Canada, the USA and Europe. His most recent role debuts include the title role of Peter Grimes at English National Opera, his Royal Opera House debut as Rodolphe in a new production of Guillaume Tell, Jaquino Fidelio with Le Cercle de l’Harmonie in Paris and Brussels, Herod Salome at NI Opera, Dr Caius in a new production of Falstaff at Canadian Opera Company, Der Steuermann Der Fliegende Holländer for Pacific Opera Victoria, Narraboth Salome for Manitoba Opera and Goro Madame Butterfly for English National Opera. A fine Britten interpreter, he has performed to great acclaim the role of Bob Boles Peter Grimes at ENO, Opera de Oviedo, Vlaamse Opera and with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Vladimir Jurowski and with Accademia di Santa Cecilia and Sir Antonio Pappano.

  • In the 2016/17 season Colvin will make his debut at Salzburg Festival reprising the role of the Duke of Cornwall King Lear. He also returns to ENO to join the cast of Berg’s Lulu, and as a regular at the Canadian Opera Company, will sing Monostatos The Magic Flute and Thomas Scott in Canadian composer Harry Somers opera Louis Riel, which will then transfer to the National Arts Centre Canada.


    Last season he made his company debuts with Dutch National Opera as L'Aumonier Dialogues des Carmelites, and at Opéra de Paris as the Duke of Cornwall in Aribert Reimann’s King Lear. He also returned to Canadian Opera Company as Basilio in Le Nozze di Figaro. Further operatic performances have included Ferrando Così fan tutte for the Canadian Opera Company; Don Ramiro La Cenerentola for Portland Opera; Don Ottavio Don Giovanni for Chicago Opera Theater; Rodrigo La donna del lago for Garsington Opera; Almaviva Il barbiere di Siviglia for Lyric Opera of Kansas City and Opera Lyra Ottawa; Belmonte Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Rape of Lucretia and Semele for Chicago Opera Theater; and Shepherd Oedipus Rex for the Edinburgh International Festival. Other credits include a recording project of the works of Lysenko, a big-screen debut as Don Ottavio in the film Don Giovanni Unmasked alongside Dmitri Hvorostovsky and recordings on the Naxos, CBC and Warner labels.


    Recent concert engagements include a recital with Scottish Opera, as part of their Sir Walter Scott and Opera series, Beethoven Missa Solemnis for the Richard Eaton Singers of Edmonton; Das Lied von der Erde for Louisville Orchestra; Messiah with National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa and Seattle Symphony; and Haydn’s Creation with New Mexico Symphony. Further highlights include Mozart Requiem for Chicago’s Grant Park Festival and Toronto Symphony Orchestra; Messiah and Bach Weihnachtsoratorium with Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra; Messiah with Toronto Symphony Orchestra; Schubert Mass in A Flat at Festival Vancouver; Beethoven Symphony No.9 with Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, l’Orchestre Symphonique de Quebec, Elora Festival and Festival de Lanuadière; Elgar Dream of Gerontius, Haydn Die Schöpfung and Verdi Requiem for the Elora Festival; Britten Serenade with Richard Bradshaw and the Canadian Opera Company Orchestra.
