Baroque

  • The Academy of Ancient Music energises baroque and classical music by playing the repertoire in the style and spirit it was first performed in. Resident at the University of Cambridge and Associate Ensemble at the Barbican Centre in London, over the past 40 years the AAM has toured across six continents and in 2013 launched its own record label, AAM Records.


    Intermusica has a close relationship with the AAM through representing the group’s Artistic Director, Richard Egarr. In 2012 Intermusica oversaw the AAM’s tour of China, taking in cities including Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong.

  • Founded in 1973 by Christopher Hogwood, the Academy of Ancient Music, over the next three decades the AAM’s fame spread to every corner of the globe as it built up a huge discography which now totals over 300 recordings — Brit and Grammy award-winning recordings of the great baroque masterworks; celebrated opera releases starring Cecilia Bartoli, Dame Emma Kirkby and Dame Joan Sutherland; pioneering cycles of the Mozart and Beethoven symphonies.


    Today, led by Richard Egarr who succeeded Hogwood as Music Director in 2006, the orchestra has continued to perform across the globe. AAM also continues to work with an increasingly diverse roster of guest directors — Japanese Bach expert Masaaki Suzuki, acclaimed Italian violinist-virtuoso Giuliano Carmignola; conductors Bernard Labadie, Paul Goodwin, Stephen Cleobury and Stephen Layton — ensuring that fresh ideas and approaches continually inspire the group.

Vivaldi 275
Asia, May 2016
After the huge success of their 'Nature's Voice & Verse' Asia tour in 2013, the AAM returned to the Asia region with a different take on Vivaldi to mark the 275th anniversary of the composer’s death in 2016. World renowned mezzo soprano Vivica Genaux joined Richard Egarr and the AAM to perform 'Vivaldi 275' - vocal and instrumental masterpieces by Vivaldi in this special anniversary year.

Nature's Voice and Verse
Asia, July 2013
Academy of Ancient Music toured to Asia in June 2013 visiting Seoul, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing & Tianjin for six performances. Working with Korean soprano Sunhae Im for concerts in Seoul Arts Center and British soprano Elin Manahan Thomas for concerts in Hong Kong and Shanghai, the group performed various programmes including works by Corelli, Mozart and Haydn.

Led from the violin by Pavlo Beznosiuk, the orchestra performed a Four Seasons programme of Vivaldi violin concertos interwoven with Handel, Purcell and Vivaldi arias sung by Sunhae Im. Following the seasons from Spring, through Summer, Autumn and Winter, each Aria is related to the season concerto which it is performed alongside.

The group closed the first Tianjin International Chamber Music Festival on at the Tianjin Grand Theatre.

Brandenburg Concerti
Asia, Australia, February 2011
The Academy of Ancient Music tour to Shanghai Concert Hall and Perth International Arts Festival in February,

conducted and play-directed by Music Director Richard Egarr, the tour marks the orchestra’s debut in Shanghai. They perform JS Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos (the first ever time all the concertos have been performed in a single concert in China).


In Australia, the orchestra perform the Brandenburg concerti, Haydn The Creation and a chamber music concert at Albany Entertainment Center that includes trios and concerti by Handel and Purcell.
