Praised for the power and depth of his voice, British bass Callum Thorpe initially pursued a scientific career, obtaining a PhD in Immunology from Imperial College London, before turning to music and studying at the Royal Academy of Music.
Recent operatic engagements include Sarastro Die Zauberflöte, Banco Macbeth (Theater Basel), Masetto Don Giovanni (Glydebourne Tour, Garsington Opera, Birgitta Festival), Commendatore / Masetto Don Giovanni (Opéra Royale de Versailles, Mark Minkowski), Lieutenant Radcliffe Billy Budd (Opera North), Plutone Orfeo (Royal Opera House / Roundhouse), Antinoo / Tempo Ulisse (Théâtre des Champs Elysées, Emmanuelle Haim), and Messiah (Bergen National Opera). He is sang the role of Gibarian in the world premiere of Fujikura’s Solaris (Théâtre des Champs Elysées, Opera de Lille, Opera de Lausanne) and regularly sings twentieth century opera, including Arthur/Officer 2 The Lighthouse (Dartington International Festival), Loudspeaker Der Kaiser von Atlantis (English Touring Opera).
Since 2017 Thorpe has been a member of the solo ensemble at the Bayerische Staatsoper, Munich, where recent roles include Zuniga Carmen, Farfallo Die Schweigsame Frau, Truffaldin Ariadne aux Naxos.
He has also performed extensively with William Christie and Les Arts Florissants, including as Valens Theodora (Théâtre des Champs Elysées, Lincoln Centre New York, Concertgebouw), The Fairy Queen (Glyndebourne Festival, Théâtre des Champs Elysées, Brooklyn Academy of Music), Hippolyte et Aricie (Glydebourne Festival), Polyphemus Acis and Galatea (Festival de Thiré), Phobetor Atys (Théâtre des Champs Elysées, Brooklyn Academy of Music), Adonis Venus & Adonis, Pluto La Descent d’Orphée aux Enfers, Israel in Egypt (BBC Proms), The Fairy Queen, and The Indian Queen.
On the concert platform, recent performances including Messiah (Bath Abbey, Balearic Isles Symphony Orchestra, Royal Northern Sinfonia, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra), St John Passion and Mozart Requiem (Minkoswki), St Matthew Passion (Symphony Hall, Philharmonie Zuidnederland), Verdi Requiem (Crouch End Festival Chorus), Israel in Egypt (Salisbury Cathedral), Apollo Apollo e Dafne (Concerto Copenhagen, Lammermuir Festival), Mozart Requiem (Singapore Symphony Orchestra) and Hunding Die Walküre (Bilbao Symphony Orchestra). He performs regularly with the Early Opera Company and Christian Curnyn: Jupiter Platee, Ariodate Serse, Achilla Guilio Cesare (St John’s Smith Square) Lucifer La Resurrezione (Wigmore Hall) and with Arcangelo / Jonathan Cohen: La Senna Festeggiante, The Shakespeare Prom (BBC Proms), Monteverdi - Love and Loss (Wigmore Hall).
Upcoming performances in 2018/19 include Masetto Don Giovanni, Erste Nazarehe Salome, Zuniga Carmen at the Bayerische Staatsoper, Marti A Village Romeo & Juliet (Concertgebouw, Sir Mark Elder), Beethoven Symphony No.9 (Basel Symphony Orchestra, Ivor Bolton) and Vivaldi’s La Senna Festeggiante (Wigmore Hall, Jonathan Cohen).
