Chloé van Soeterstède

Taki Concordia Conducting Fellow, 2019-21

  • As part of Intermusica’s commitment to nurturing young artists, we are delighted to be mentoring the young conductor Chloé van Soeterstède. Born in 1988, she studied conducting at the Royal Northern College of Music after studying viola at the Royal Academy of Music. She has assisted conductors such as François-Xavier Roth, Vasily Petrenko and Vladimir Jurowski and in 2019 was appointed by Marin Alsop to become the Taki Concordia Fellow 2019/21. In the coming seasons she will make her debut with many orchestras across Europe and North America, including five from her native France.

  • Highlights of van Soeterstède’s 2019/20 season include debuts with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and Manchester’s new music ensemble Psappha as well as with several orchestras  in France including the Orchestre National de Lyon, Orchestre National de Montpellier and Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire and also with the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra. Across these engagements she conducts a wide range of repertoire from Mozart and Mendelssohn through to Prokofiev, Vaughan Williams and Tchaikovsky.


    In 2018/19 van Soeterstède made her debut with the Orchestre National de Lille conducting a new work Syrian Voices by Benjamin Attahir, the Aurora Orchestra conducting a new work by Anna Meredith at London’s King’s Place, with Southbank Sinfonia at London’s South Bank Centre and at the Bolzano Dance Festival with the Haydn Orchestra in collaboration with the dance company Virgilio Sieni. In previous seasons she has conducted the European Union Youth Orchestra, Manchester Camerata and North Cyprus Presidential Symphony Orchestra.


    Van Soeterstède has taken part in masterclasses with Mena, Alsop, Petrenko, Elder, Paavo Järvi, Gražinytė-Tyla, Schläfi and Panula. She has served as Assistant Conductor to François-Xavier Roth, Sir Mark Elder, Storgårds Petrenko and Tortelier amongst others and in 2018 was assistant conductor at Holland Park Opera on a production of Mascagni's Isabeau.


    In 2012, van Soeterstède founded the Arch Sinfonia, a vibrant chamber orchestra based in London renowned for its boundless energy and committed performances. Arch Sinfonia performs a wide range of repertoire and strives to build bridges between artists and audience. She also works regularly with young musicians and with orchestras such as the the National Children's Orchestra of Great Britain and Hallé Youth Orchestra and she is currently the Principal Conductor of the Hertfordshire Schools’ Symphony Orchestra with whom she has toured across Germany.


    Van Soeterstède studied conducting at the Royal Northern College of Music (2015-2017) with Clark Rundell and Mark Heron where she was awarded the Kennedy scholarship and was also supported by the Derek Hill Foundation.
