Claire de Sévigné

  • Named one of CBC’s Top 30 Canadian Classical Musicians under 30, coloratura soprano Claire de Sévigné was recently nominated for a 2016 Classical Album of the Year JUNO award for her Naxos album of Vivaldi Cantatas featuring Maestro Kevin Mallon and the Aradia Ensemble. • Highlights of the 2020/21 season include Cunegonde Candide at the Grand Théâtre de Genève, and Adele Die Fledermaus for Angers Nantes Opéra and Opéra Grand Avignon.

Her most recent success has been with the Savonlinna Opera Festival, Opernhaus Zürich and Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in the role of Blonde in Die Entführung aus dem Serail, in which she was hailed for her “sparkling top notes and vocal brilliance, lightness and finesse”. In the 2019-20 season, de Sévigné performed Sacerdotessa Aida, Phani Les Indes galantes, Blondchen Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Clorinda La Cenerentola and L’Ange Saint-François d’Assise at Grand Théâtre de Genève as part of their ensemble.

As a member of the studio at the Opernhaus Zürich between 2015 and 2017, de Sévigné performed the roles of Hermione in Manfred Trojahn Orest, Feu, Princesse and Rossignol L’enfant et les sortilèges, and Angelica Orlando Paladino. Prior to this, she was a member of the Canadian Opera Company’s Ensemble Studio where roles here included Despina Così fan tutti, First Niece Peter Grimes, Ida Die Fledermaus and Servilia La clemenza di Tito. During this period, she also performed the role of Die Modestin Der Rosenkavalier as part of the Young Singer Academy at the Salzburg Festival.

Equally in demand on the concert platform, recent highlights for de Sévigné include her debut with Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam as Vierge in Honegger Jeanne d’Arc au Bucher, Le Grand Macabre with the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester and Alan Gilbert, Messiah with Bilbao Orkestra Sinfonikoa and Toronto Symphony Orchestra, a concert tour of China with the Salzburg YSP in collaboration with Hantang International Music Festival, Messiah with the Edmonton Symphony, Previn Honey and Rue with the Niagara Symphony, and Mozart C Minor Mass with the Niagara Chorus.

She was a semi-finalist at the Operalia Competition in 2016 and is supported by the Jacqueline Desmarais Foundation, SSHRC Bombardier Master’s Research Grant, and the Canadian Opera Volunteer Committee. She holds a Master's Degree from the University of Toronto.

"The Canadian soprano displayed surprising reserves of vocal power and flexibility, with a stunning attack on the stratospheric coloratura of the penultimate “Dulcissime.”
