  • In the 2019/20 season, Babayan makes his debut with orchestras including the Leipzig Gewandhaus, Bamberg Symphony, Toronto Symphony and Mahler Chamber Orchestras. In November 2019, Babayan will be the ‘Curating Artist’ with the Konzerthaus Dortmund which includes six performances as part of a multi-day festival in which he will perform with his closest musical partners and friends including Daniil Trifonov, Martha Argerich, Mischa Maisky, Valery Gergiev, Sergey Khachatryan and the Mariinsky Orchestra. In recital, Babayan performs across the season at venues including Carnegie Hall, Konzerthaus Dortmund, Auditorium Radio France, Kumho Art Hall and Mogens Dahl Copenhagen.


    Babayan collaborates with such conductors as Elim Chan, Thomas Dausgaard, Hans Graf, Neeme Järvi, Andrew Manze, Ken-David Masur, Rafael Payare, David Robertson, Tugan Sokhiev, Yuri Temirkanov and Joshua Weilerstein, among others. Since 2006, Babayan has performed with Valery Gergiev on numerous occasions, including at the International Festival “Stars of the White Nights”, the Salzburg Festival, the Moscow Easter Festival, the Barbican with the London Symphony Orchestra, the Mariinsky Theatre, the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory, the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris and at the Rotterdam Philharmonic-Gergiev Festival, where Babayan was Artist-in-Residence. Babayan made his BBC Proms debut in 2014 performing Prokofiev Piano Concertos Nos. 2 and 5 with the London Symphony Orchestra and Gergiev. Previous orchestral engagements include the Cleveland Orchestra, NDR Elbphilharmonie, BBC Scottish Symphony at the Edinburgh International Festival and Antwerp Symphony.


    Recent recital highlights include performances at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Vienna Konzerthaus, Zurich Tonhalle, Hamburg Elbphilharmonie, Edinburgh International Festival, Wigmore Hall, the Celebrity Series of Boston and Mariinsky Theatre. He also appears at major festivals including La Roque d’Anthéron, Piano aux Jacobins in Toulouse, Tsinandali, Gstaad and Verbier Festivals.


    Babayan has an exclusive recording agreement with Deutsche Grammophon. His first release on the label was a collaboration with Martha Argerich entitled 'Prokofiev for Two' — a recording of Babayan’s transcriptions of a dozen pieces from Romeo and Juliet alongside other works by the composer.


    Born in Armenia into a musical family, Babayan began his studies with Georgy Saradjev and continued at the Moscow Conservatory with Mikhail Pletnev, Vera Gornostayeva and Lev Naumov. Following his first trip outside the USSR in 1989, he won consecutive first prizes in several major international competitions including the Robert Casadesus International Piano Competition (renamed the Cleveland International Piano Competition), the Hamamatsu Piano Competition, and the Scottish International Piano Competition. An American citizen, Babayan lives in New York City.
